The Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) is a common and adaptable reptile found in forests, fields, wetlands, gardens, and suburban areas throughout eastern North America.
Recognizable by its slender body and distinctive yellow or light-colored stripes running the length of its dark-colored back, it is often seen basking in the sun or moving through vegetation in search of prey. Its diet consists primarily of earthworms, amphibians, small fish, and insects.
Eastern Garter Snakes are nonvenomous and play an important role in maintaining balanced ecosystems by helping control populations of small animals and invertebrates.
